Description

'PARISH OF ILKESTON MARKET PLACE SK 4641 NW 7/48 (West Side) Town Hall GV II Town Hall. 1867-8 by R C Sutton of Nottingham. Italianate style. Red brick with sandstone dressings and yellow and blue brick dressings. Welsh slate roof. Two storeys. East elevation of five bays, the centre three advanced. Chamfered plinth, banded rustication to impost height, continuing as quoins to first floor entablature and moulded stone cornice. Moulded stone cornice to first floor, surmounted by balustraded stone parapet with urns. The ground floor has a central recessed porch with round arch, flanked by round arched windows set in recessed panels. Flanked again by two similar windows. The arches have polychromatic brickwork, keyblocks, moulded hoodmoulds and moulded impost band. The windows have margin light sashes. The first floor has five round-arched windows, the outer ones with plain brick tympana. Keyblocks, stone hoodmould and decorative stone bands. Margin light sashes. In front of the centre window is a bold stone balcony on carved brackets, with openwork balustrade and ball finials. C20 extensions to rear not of special interest. Listing NGR: SK4644441707'.
