Description

School. 1911 by G H Widdows (Derbyshire County Council architect). Brown brick, pebbledashed over sill height, with stone and tile dressings. Steeply pitched plain tile roofs with wide overhanging eaves and vented brick ridge and side wall stacks. All gables are about 3 feet narrower than the walls below and have tile dentilled eaves. Single storey, plus attics in parts. Three ranges with transverse passages between them. North front has a central gabled bay with attics, flanked by large brick external stacks and lower wings to sides. Central segment headed arch has stone impost blocks and double keystone with radiating tiles between. Behind is a plain plank door and to either side there are 2-light casement windows. Beyond to either side there are two 3-light casement windows with low transomes. Above, in the central bay, is another 3-light window which has a blind semi-circular recess over with stone keyblock. To either side it has lower single casement windows and large hopper heads. To the top of the gable there are three small louvred vents. South elevation is similar. Three gable ends to west and east elevations, each have a central segment headed blind recess with stone keyblock and three casement windows within. To either side of the gable the flanking horizontal pieces have three vertical stone bands. Between the gabled bays, the transverse passages each have three pairs of double glazed doors behind an open arcade of wooden posts with curved braces to top, except southern passage on west elevation which has been boarded in. Above there are three roof dormers with 3-light casement windows over each arcade. All fenestration is small pane casements. Built as part of a group with Highfield Infants School. Widdows was an exponent of advanced ideas on school planning and ventilation. Listing NGR: SK4828134740
