Listed Building: CROSSROADS FARMHOUSE, ASHBOURNE ROAD (1087421)

'ASHBOURNE ROAD 1. 5167 (South side ) Crossroads Farmhouse SK 34 NW 7/7 3.2.66. II* GV 2. Early C19. A very large farmhouse said to have been formerly a posting house called "The Owl" standing where the turnpike to Matlock crossed that to Ashbourne. Unusual architecture and constructional methods indicate that it was built by Strutts. Ashlar with slate roof, eaves cornice and large stone stacks. Three storeys. Four bays. Two light stone mullioned windows with cast iron casements and glazing bars alternate with blank window spaces except on ground floor. Bands. Off centre door with heavy stone hood on large brackets originally supporting statuette of an owl (now in the garden). Good glazed lantern. Six panelled door (top 2 panels now glazed). Lower 2 storey wing to east with 4 casements of 2 lights each. Red brick eastern end of this (in farmyard) has stone framed dog kennel in base. To east and west of main house and advanced from it are single storey wings, each with 2 large panels in front and with cornices and blocking course. To east of eastern wing single storey 6 bay section. The interior has a certain amount of ironwork used in its construction; the kitchen ceiling in particular is interesting because it is formed of stone slabs fitted into iron girders.
