Listed Building: Upper Birchitt Farmhouse (1087774)

'This list entry was subject to a Minor Amendment on 27 June 2022 to correct typos in the text SK 37 NW 5/52 PARISH OF DRONFIELD RED MOOR ROAD (Off) Upper Birchitt Farmhouse II Farmhouse. Late C16, enlarged and remodelled early C17, and altered in C19. Coursed squared coal measures sandstone, rising from a shallow plinth, with flush quoins, coped gables and moulded kneelers, and gable ashlar ridge stacks with moulded drips. Stone slated roofs. L-plan house with lower earlier range to west, and a central lobby entrance range to the east, at right angles to the main range. Earlier range south elevation. Two storeys, three bays, the western bay possibly remodelled. Doorway with quoined surround and substantial lintel in the angle of the two ranges, the eastern quoins obscured by the later range. To west, stacked former recessed chamfer mullioned windows, the ground floor opening formerly of five-lights now with a single surviving mullion, the first floor opening formerly four light, with all mullions removed. C20 casements in old stone surrounds. Further to the west a blocked doorway, against the line of the stack. At the west end, a C19 stable doorway. East range, east elevation. Two storeys and attics, three bays with plain central doorway and C20 door. Three-light chamfer mullioned window to south of doorway. C20 casement with transom lights beneath deep lintel to north. Two two-light and one three-light chamfer mullioned windows to first floor, the central window lower than the outer wo. South end elevation roughcast, with a five-light recessed chamfer mullioned window with transoms to the ground floor, and a four-light window with transoms to the first floor, both openings with dripmouldings. Three-light blocked recessed chamfer mullioned attic window. Interior. Substantial oak ceiling timbers and spine beams and, in the east range, two finely wrought stone hearths with massive lintels and chamfered surrounds, below well-made relieving arches.
