Description

House. Early C17 with C17 and C18 alterations, and farther alterations and additions C20. Coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables, and ball finials. Ashlar ridge stacks, stone slates, and concrete tiles. Lobby-entrance plan with two parallel ranges, each with a central stack. East elevation of 2 storeys and attics, 3 bays, the northernmost bay standing at a lower level and of 2 storeys only. Taller part with quoined surround to centrally placed doorway, flanked by 2-light chamfered mullioned windows to the south side, and by an advanced C20 two-storey canted bay window with tile hanging. Lower single bay with blocked quoined doorway beneath a massive lintel, now with small-paned cast-iron casement window. To the north of the doorway, a 2-light chamfered mullioned window with C20 glazing bar casements and, at first floor level, a shallow 3-light chamfered mullioned window. South elevation built into rising ground, with twin gabled elevation, each gable with stacked 2-light chamfered mullioned windows, having C20 casements with single horizontal glazing bars. Quoined doorway beneath a massive lintel at the junction of the two ranges at first floor level, approached by a flight of stone steps. Western range with 4-light chamfered mullioned window to first floor of north gable, and 3-light window to the attic. INTERIOR: much altered, but with restored C18 jowelled hearth surround to north gable of lower 2-storey bay, bressumer beam with empty heck post mortice to north side of central doorway of the eastern range, and with a similar arrangement to the south of the central stack in the western range. Beamed ceilings throughout. C18 hearth with modestly moulded surround to north-west corner of western range. An outbuilding bears a relocated plaque: 'IB 1627'.
