Description

This record has been generated from an "old county number" (OCN) scheduling record. These are monuments that were not reviewed under the Monuments Protection Programme and are some of our oldest designation records. As such they do not yet have the full descriptions of their modernised counterparts available. The Ticknall tramway, a 4ft 2inch guage plateway, built in 1802 and remained in use until 1916. This tunnel was built under Calke Park Drive to hide the traffic from the house, and survives in good condition, with stone portals at each end, it is approx 126m long; its walls are of stone to a height of approx 1m; with a brick vault; its main height is approx 2m; for the first 25m of its length from the north-east, it measures approx 3m wide, narrowing to 2m for the remainder of its length. It has 3 ventilation shafts. <1> Tunnel in poor condition; Too far from house "to hide it from the house" merely hides limestone tramway from approach road to Calke Abbey. Approach from west is a terrace cutting.< 2> SOURCES = Desc text/AM7//1977//< 1> ; Desc text/AM107/Hart CR/1984//<2>
