Description

SK 26 NW PARISH OF OVER HADDON CHURCH LANE 2/34 (East Side) St Anne's Church II Parish church. 1880 by H Cockbain of Middleton. Rock-faced, coursed squared lime- stone with gritstone dressings. Steeply pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge,and stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. Ridge crosses to east gables of nave and chancel and to west gable of nave an elaborate pinnacled bellcote with cusped nodding ogee arches to four sides, topped by crockets. Plinth, continuous moulded cill band and moulded eaves cornice, with ballflowers to chancel. Projecting western bay, nave and lower chancel, south porch and north vestry. Dec inspired style. Western bay has large pointed 3-light window with cusped intersecting tracery and moulded hood with carved stops. Above, pierced, castellated parapets with corner pinnacles, crocketed to top, To either side of bay, diagonal buttresses to nave. North elevation has three 3-light flat headed windows with quatrefoils over cusped lights. Continuous hoodmould over and stepped buttresses between and to east corner of nave. Beyond, north vestry with pointed 2-light north window and steps down to cellar to east. 3-light east window in similar style to west window except for central rose to top. Corner buttress to either side and illegible stone plaque below. South elevatior has 1980 slate sundial by David Kindersley to east of chancel and pointed 2-light cusped Y-tracery window to west. Two nave windows identical to northern windows with buttresses between. To west, porch with double chamfered pointed doorcase, flanked by diagonal buttresses. Interior has double chamfered pointed chancel arch on corbelled- out pilasters and moulded tower arch on nook shafts with hoodmould over. C19 roofs, boarded with diagonal ribs. Chancel has cusped arcaded low screen on polished marble columns. Sedilla in similar style to south. Mosaic altar back and late C19 stained glass to east window North vestry door with Caernarvon head. Pews C19 and very plain. Octagonal stone font on four polished marble columns.
