BASLOW & BUBNELL, BUBNELL LANE (West Side), Bubnell House and Bubnell House East
(Formerly listed as Bubnell House)
II
House, now divided in two. Possibly C16, altered in the C17, C18 and early C19. Coursed rubblestone, partly rendered. Slate stone roof and coped gables with moulded kneelers. Central ashlar ridge stack. Two storeys, T-plan of hall and cross wing type. South elevation of four bays. Projecting gabled bay to left has a lean-to C20 addition not of special interest. Glazing bar sash above. Recessed right hand part has a central doorway with bolection moulded doorcase with hoodmould and pair of C19 half glazed doors. Flanked on each side by glazing bar sashes in plain ashlar surrounds. Two similar windows above, either side of a 2-light square section mullion window with stepped surround. To the north is an outshut under a catslide roof. Tall 2-light staircase window with a transom, the lower part infilled with brick. To the right a C17 recessed and chamfered cross window with an additional light added to the lower half. The interior has in what is now the party wall the remains of three Caernarvon-arched doorways built of large blocks of ashlar. They appear to be medieval and in situ and may be of the remains of service doorways between an open hall and crosswing. They are not regularly spaced. Two are placed together with between them a wall running east, built of large blocks of ashlar. Splat baluster dogleg staircase. Large stone hearth with bracketed lintel and round-arched alcoves. Late C18 stone chimneypiece. An upper room has a bolection moulded stone chimneypiece.
