Description

'BAKEWELL SK2168 BASLOW ROAD 831-1/4/14 (East side) 13/03/51 Castle Hill House and Stable Block with gates adjoining Castle Hill House GV II Shown on O.S. Map as Castle Hill. House with attached stable block and gates; now school boarding house of Lady Manners School. Late C18 with early-mid C19 additions and later alterations. Stucco to main house; side wing and stable block of deeply-coursed sandstone; Welsh slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 5x2 bays with service wing to rear; 2-storey, 2-bay side wing on left then a lower bay with carriage arch beyond which is a 2-storey, 4-bay range fronting single-storey buildings around an enclosed courtyard. Main block: chamfered quoins; later central porch with part-glazed double doors flanked by pilasters beneath entablature with parapet; porch extends by 2 bays to right as an infilled loggia. Projecting sills and raised-edge architraves to 6/6 sashes on ground and first floors; 3/6 sashes to second floor. Central first-floor window is an 8/8 sash in moulded architrave with double keystone; 4/8 sash above in matching surround with consoles to eaves cornice which breaks forward at centre and ends. Coped parapet with centre panel and end dies. 2-storey side wing on left, in same style, has exposed stonework and ashlar dressings to 6/6 sashes. To left of this is a rusticated basket arch into courtyard; leaded casement above arch; eaves cornice and parapet; corniced end stack on left. Stable block renovated 1994: 2 windows to each floor on left then 2 windows to first floor between these and the archway; hipped left end to roof. Gates: mid C19 iron gates beneath arch have spiked dog bars, mid-rails with rings and spear finials (one gate removed and damaged). INTERIOR: original door architrave within porch. Entrance hall has oak dado panelling and basket arch on panelled pilasters; oval ceiling panel. Broad oak staircase with column, barley sugar and twisted balusters to each tread; wreathed handrail; dado panelling. Twin round-arched sashes with glazing bars to stair window. 6-panel doors in architraves. Front-right room: plaster wall panels and square ceiling panel; Ionic wooden fireplace with vases and figures. Rear-right room: plaster wall panels, wooden fireplace with columns and paterae. Service stair in rear wing: cantilevered stone steps with turned newel and oak handrail on oak and iron rods. Listing NGR: SK2195768829.'
