Description
'BAKEWELL
SK26NW BURTON CLOSE DRIVE 831-1/2/38 (North side) Terrace retaining walls, steps and gates to south and east of Burton Closes
GV II
Terrace retaining wall with associated steps and gates. Mid-late C19. Probably originally laid out by Paxton for William Allcard of Burton Closes (qv); likely to have been extended as the house became enlarged. Deeply-coursed dressed sandstone with ashlar copings and steps; iron gates. L-shaped retaining wall approximately 60m in length across south front and 45m across east front. South limb is low and has moulded copings; 3 openings with stone steps to lower terrace; ramped side wall at west end. The terrace breaks forward at the south-east corner beyond which the retaining wall continues north before terminating at a broad flight of 19 steps with ramped side walls. At the foot of the steps is an iron side gate; at the head is a balustrade with 10 Tudor-arched openings which closes the north end of the terrace. A short section of wall across north end of house finishes at a flight of steps with a pair of Gothic Revival gates.
