Description

'BAKEWELL SK2169 HOLME LANE 831-1/3/96 (North side) 13/03/51 Burre House (excluding C20 garages at rear of eastern wing) (Formerly Listed as: HOLME (North side) Burre House (excluding modern garages at rear of eastern wing)) GV II House. Late C18 and early C19. Ashlar and deeply-coursed sandstone; slate roof with rolled lead ridges. EXTERIOR: near symmetrical composition of 3-storey, 3-bay centre; one-storey, single-bay side wings flanked by 2-storey, single-bay pavilions; screen wall to right links to gateway into rear courtyard; 2-storey, 2-bay service wing to far left. Centre: plinth; 4-panelled door and fanlight with radial glazing bars beneath archivolt within Doric aedicule. The door is flanked by 3-storey canted bay windows with first-floor band, first-floor sill band and 2/2 sashes of diminishing heights. 2/2 sash over door has cornice on consoles. Eaves cornice and rolled-lead ridges to hipped roof with corniced ashlar end stacks. Side wing to left: tripartite sash beneath band; coped gable with vase finials. Altered side wing to right has later rectangular projection with stone-mullioned tripartite window; 1/1 sashes. The 2-storey pavilions are set back: impost bands to round-arched sashes with glazing bars beneath 6-pane casements; pedimented gables with ball finials. Tall screen wall to right masks later garages and returns to link to gateway to rear yard. Service wing to far left with 2/2 sashes and parapet continued from adjacent pavilion. INTERIOR: not inspected. Listing NGR: SK2176769111.'
