Description

SK 27 NW PARISH OF NETHER PADLEY 1/21 12.7.67 Toll Bar Cottage GV II Former Toll House, now a house. Late C18, with C20 alterations and additions. Coursed rubble gritstone with quoins, plain gables, gable end and intermediate stone stacks, stone slated roof. Double depth plan, the rear range a C20 addition. East-elevation; two storeys, three bays, the central bay a semi-circular bay window with a 4-light flush mullioned opening to the first floor above two single ground floor lights. To the south end, a blocked doorway with a massive lintel and surround, new with a 2-light C20 chamfer mullioned window inserted. At the north end, stacked 2-light flush mullioned windows, restored in C20. All openings with C20 joinery and leaded lights. This toll house marked the end of the Newhaven to Grindleford Turnpike, established by a Turnpike Act of 1758. Listed for group value only. Listing NGR: SK2450977851
