PARISH OF MIDDLETON AND SMERRILL SK 16 SE 4/33 Bateman's Tomb in the grounds of Chapel House II Tomb. 1861. Burial place of the Derbyshire Archaeologist, Thomas Bateman. Rectangular stone tomb surmounted at west end by a stone model of a Bronze Age cinerary urn, and bearing the inscription 'Thos Batemanes D. Aug 28th 1861 aged 39 years'. Surrounded by contemporary spear-headed cast iron railings on low stone plinth. The Bateman collection is in the Sheffield City Museum.
