Garden walls and attached railings. Late C17 and early C18 walls with c1725 railings attached, by Robert Bakewell. Part of French style garden designed by Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall, with work carried out by William Cooke of Walcot. Rubble stone and red brick with stone dressings and iron railings. Walls attached to either side of south front of the hall are about 12 feet high with rubble stonework on the east face and red brick to west face. To north end of each wall is a semi-circular headed rusticated early C18 arch with large double keystone to top, and to south end of each wall is a tall stone pier with plain entablature and a large banded ball finial. Attached to east of eastern pier are Bakewell's elegant railings with panels of six elaborate lyre shaped standards with a strapwork frieze to top. Beyond the railings to east is a high rubble stone wall which bounds the garden to the south. To eastern end it has a segmental headed raised doorcase. Included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I. See item 6/63 for sources.
