Description
'SK 18 SE PARISH OF CASTLETON BACK STREET 7/20 (East Side) School and attached walls and railings II
School. Dated 1863. Coursed squared rock-faced limestone with gritstone dressings. Welsh slate roof with moulded stone coped gables with plain kneelers. Stone gable end stacks. Quoins, chamfered plinth and chamfered eaves band. Single storey. Symmetrical west elevation of six bays with central projecting feature like an external stack, surmounted by a tall polygonal bell turret with pyramidal top. Flanked on each side by two pairs of square section flush mullion windows with pointed cusped lights. Between each pair of windows is a buttress with two set offs, all linked by a moulded sill band, The outer bays have identical porches, gabled, with moulded copings and kneelers. Doorways with chamfered surrounds and four centred arches with dripmoulding above. Plank doors with decorative iron hinges. The porches are marked 'Girls' and 'Boys'. Attached to the side and wrapping round the front is a low wall with chamfered copings, surmounted by iron railings.
