Description

This record has been generated from an "old county number" (OCN) scheduling record. These are monuments that were not reviewed under the Monuments Protection Programme and are some of our oldest designation records. As such they do not yet have the full descriptions of their modernised counterparts available. Roman road paved with large slabs of gritstone, 2yds x 1yd with channelled ruts. In a part overgrown with heather. A "Medieval" and "Post Medieval" pack horse route over Banford Moor can be followed through to this holloway which twists and winds up the escarpment on a very narrow, torcherous route with an average depth of 1.5m and width of 4m. The southern part of this Post Medieval route over the edge is overlaid by a 19C quarry road. The paving only remains on the top of the edge and over the storage moss in the form of rough pavers forming a causeway through the soft ground of a maximum width of 2m. The wheel ruts measure 2ft 8ins centre to centre. (0.8m) The Roman road from Brough on Noe (Navio) to Templeborough has not been located by recent fieldwork (Hart and Wroe) on this alignment.
