Monument record MDR10018 - Artefact scatter, west of Romeley Wood, Clowne

Full Description

Fieldwalking carried out in 1997 recovered 3 abraded sherds of medieval pottery, one of post-medieval pottery and one of Romano-British grey ware from a field immediately to the east of the M1 motorway near Romeley Wood, Clowne. The medieval and post-medieval pottery may be the result of manuring the field in the past. The Romano-British sherd was in a fresh and unabraded condition which could indicate truncation of a discrete archaeological feature by ploughing. However, it may also have been in a secondary context as spoil from the construction of the M1 motorway was apparently spread over adjacent fields and used to fill in voids. (1)
