An example of an old turnpike milestone inscribed 'London 139, Derby 12, Wirksworth 1'. (1)
Grade II listed milestone comprising a square-sectioned gritstone pillar with smoothly dressed faces, the sides slightly tooled. It is approximately 3ft high and is set into the northern verge of the lane running south-east/north-west that links the settlements of Wirksworth and Belper. The south-west face is inscribed ' LONDON / 139 / DERBY 12 / WIRKSWORTH 1', and has gloved hands pointing in two directions. Later inscriptions include survey benchmarks. (2, 3)
