Full Description

Milepost, Derby Road, Wirksworth, an early 19th century structure. Metal milepost, "Wirksworth 1 mile / Derby 12 miles", by J. Harrison of Derby. (1) Grade II listed early 19th century cast iron milepost, with a rounded top plate lettered 'Wirksworth' and below this 'LONDON / 138 / MILES'. One of the splayed sides reads 'DERBY / 12 / MILES' and the other reads 'WIRKSWORTH / 1 / MILE'. The milepost has a width of 20½ inches, a depth of 8 inches and a height of 34 inches. (2-3) From the National Heritage List for England: 'DERBY ROAD 1. 1839 Mile Post 1 mile from Wirksworth SK 25 SE 5/60 II 2. Early C19. Cast iron with rounded top plate lettered "London 138 miles", and the splayed sides "Derby 12: Wirksworth lm". Listing NGR: SK2864152163.' (4)
