Listed Building record MDR10140 - Milestone, Bakewell Road, Darley Dale

Type and Period (1)

  • (Georgian to Victorian - 1800 AD to 1900 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

Milestone on the A6 towards Darley Dale. Triangular stone, the top being inscribed 'London 145 Miles', one side 'To Bakewell 7 M' with a line below that is partially buried in the ground but clearly gave a mileage to Buxton, and the other side 'to Matlock 3 M'. (1) It is suggested that this milestone also showed the distance to Derby, now buried. (2) Looking at the series of milestones and mileposts in this area on the 1st ed. 25" OS map of c. 1880, it is clear that the distance to Matlock given on the milestone actually relates to Matlock Bath.
