Full Description

Cast iron milepost, triangular section, with embossed pointing hands. On the east side 'Ashover / 5 miles / Chesterfield / 8 miles'. On the west side 'Rowsley / 1½ miles / Haddon Hall / 3½ miles / Bakewell / 5 miles'. (1) The top of the cast-iron milepost reads 'Parish/of/Darley Dale'. The north-east face has a pointing hand and reads: 'Ashover / 5 miles / Chesterfield / 8 miles // County of / Derby'. The north-west face also has a pointing hand and reads as above. The road upon which the milepost stands was first built as part of the 1760 Rowsley Bridge to Stone Edge turnpike, which branched from the Chesterfield to Matlock Bridge turnpike of the same date. The cast-iron milepost probably replaced an earlier milestone [see SMR 9854] sometime in the 19th century. (2)
