Full Description

Fieldwalking was carried out in late Jan/early Feb 1985 over most of the field to the north of Elmton Farm (centred SK49877344) and in September 1985 for the south-west corner, which was at that time a separate small field. Material recovered included one end scraper, two single end flake scrapers, one backed blade, one piercer, 9 cores, 59 flakes and 28 fragments of miscellaneous flint waste. Mesolithic material predominated in this field. In addition to the flint, there was one body sherd of Derbyshire Ware, eight body sherds + two base angles dated to the medieval period, 24 sherds of post-medieval (c. 1450-1750) date and a range of material of post-1750 date, including pottery sherds, clay pipes (5 bowls, 21 stems), a lead token, and glass fragments.
