Full Description

In 1854-55 Derby's second cemetery was built in the meadows along the foot of Chaddesden Hill; H I Stevens designed the lodge and entrance. (1) Part of the Nottingham Road Cemetery has been included on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. The cemetery was consecrated in 1855 and was the first municipal cemetery for Derby, created in response to an urgent need for more burial space. It originally occupied 32 acres of land, but was extended by 10 acres in 1880 and again by a further 9 acres in 1898. By 1900 at least eleven gardeners were needed to maintain the grounds. Further extensions occurred in 1921 and 1936. The cemetery remains in use and is maintained to a high standard by Derby City Council. (2) The Gatehouse and Lodges of Nottingham Road Cemetery have been grade II listed. They were built c. 1850 from stone with tiled roofs in an early English style. It includes a central gatehouse with a lodge at eaither side, all linked by a screen wall. The gatehouse has a slightly projecting gabled wing of one storey and one in the gables. It includes a tower in the centre above an archway with angled buttresses, a bartizan on the right-hand side, corbelled eaves, a clock and slate pyramidal roof. There are wrought iron gates to the entrance. The wings each have 2-light mullioned windows with cusped arched heads and hood moulds. The lodges are of cruciform plan and single storeyed with gabled ends, each with a 3-light mullioned window with pointed arched traceried head and with a hood mould and angle buttresses. (3)
