California Mine (Gypsum) shown on the 1st edition 25" OS map of c. 1880 and the 2nd edition 25" OS map of c. 1899. (1-2) Mining is said to have begun here in about 1835, temporarily ceasing in around 1865 when the deposits were wrongly considered exhausted. Work had probably resumed by 1870 and the mine was in full production in 1915. However, it may have suffered from the post-war fall in prices and seems to have closed beore 1930.
