Monument record MDR10553 - Bronze Age cremation cemetery, Pastures Hill, Littleover, Derby

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

An archaeological evaluation of land adjacent to the site of the former Post House Hotel, Littleover, undertaken in May 2003, recovered a number of cremations in two of the evaluation trenches. A human juvenile cremation, contained within an urn of Bronze Age date, was excavated in Trench 5. Two unexcavated cremations and a further five possible cremations were recorded in the same trench, and a sixth was recorded in Trench 3. If these cremations are contemporary, they may have been laid out along the line of a Bronze Age trackway which continued in use into, or was returned to use during, the Roman period. (1) The scheduling of the remains of Ryknield Street at Littleover was revised in March 2004 to include remains of the cemetery. (2)
