Full Description

Milestone, Common End, Main Road, Holmesfield, a mid-19th century structure. 'Rectangular milestone, painted white, with lettering under two adjacent arches: GLEADLESS/7/MILES and CALVER/7/MILES.' (1) 'Milestone almost opposite Common End Cottages, on the south side of a former turnpike road. The stone is 21" wide, 4" deep and has a visible height of 16". It may date from c1818.' (2) From the National Heritage List for England: 'PARISH OF HOLMESFIELD DRONFIELD ROAD SK 37 NW 5/146 Milestone 650 metres east of the Robin Hood Inn, Lidgate II Milestone. Mid C19. Rectangular flagstone set into ground, with inscription, now painted. GLEADLESS/7 MILES/CALVER/7/ [MILES.] Listing NGR: SK3145277713.' (3)
