Full Description

War Memorial, High Street, Woodville, erected 1926, later altered to commemorate the Second World War. From the National Heritage List for England: 'WOODVILLE 978/0/10006 HIGH STREET War Memorial II War Memorial. 1925-6. Cornish granite with bronze plaque. The memorial is in the form of a tall moulded cenotaph with a Maltese cross on top. From the National Heritage List for England: 'The cenotaph stands on a stepped plinth and has a bronze inscription plaque on the front. The inscription reads:'Erected to the memory of the late Mr W. Cousens who for 30 years was the much esteemed head master of the Wesleyan School of the village, and his scholars who paid the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. 1914-1918.' Below is the list of 130 men including 77 scholars, who fell in action. On the reverse are the names of those who fell in 1939-1945. A fine memorial, unusually commemorating the former head master of many of those killed as well as the scholars themselves and the other men of the parish.
