Full Description

A survey of Calke Abbey Estate in 1987/8 identified a small rectangular sandstone quarry on the former Southwood Common below Archer's Alders. The quarry measures c. 24m by c. 14m and is one of a group of quarries situated on a geological outcrop that extends across the northern half of the former common on an east-west alignment. The quarry probably dates from the second half of the 19th century. (1)
