Full Description

White Swan Inn, Castle Square, Melbourne, a 17th century building. 'Probably built early in the 16th century as a timber-framed house three rooms long on a stone plinth. It was mostly rewalled in brick in the late 17th or early 18th century, when it was turned into a two-cell house of two full storeys and garretts. Documentary sources suggest that it was both a school and an inn in 1790.' (1) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 38/3925 PARISH OF MELBOURNE CASTLE STREET 6/49 (West Side) 10.11.67 The White Swan Inn GV II Public house. C17, partly rebuilt in early C19 and with C20 alterations. Painted roughcast, probably over rubble stone, on deep chamfered stone plinth. Plain tile roof with central brick ridge stack and brick side wall and gable stacks to west, plus stepped eaves band. Two storeys plus garrets and three bays with lobby entrance plan. Main elevation to south has central doorcase with C17 dripmould and C20 glazed door. To east there is a small flat headed 2-light casement window and to west there is a C20 4-light small pane casement window. Above three 3-light horizontal sliding glazing bar sashes. East gable wall facing Castle Street, has a 3-light C20 casement window to ground floor, with 3-light horizontal sliding sash above and a 2-light small pane garret window. Interior has two square panel timber framed cross walls with stone nogging and an oak winder staircase against the central stack. There are also large chamfered beams and a stepped brick stack to western room with plasterwork swan to front. Listing NGR: SK3883425162.' (2)
