Full Description

The Old Priory, off Hall Drive, Sutton cum Duckmanton, an early 17th century building. 'An outbuilding to the west of Sutton Scarsdale Hall is of 17th century date.' (1) 'The Old Priory, at SK 4412 6893, is a rectangular, two-storied building with end-gables and a central gabled hip. It is built of irregularly-coursed stone with worked quoins and mullioned windows, the majority modern but those at the south end have drip-courses over them. It is a conversion of a 17th century outbuilding, formerly a brewhouse.' (2) 'House. Early 17th century, but with the interior remodelled in the 1920s. Coursed rubble sandstone with sandstone dressings. Stone slate roof with stone coped gables and kneelers. Interior with massive chamfered beams, measuring 24 inches in depth by 20 inches. The term 'priory' is a misnomer; the house must have been connected with the 17th century Sutton Scarsdale Hall.' (3) 'The building known as the Old Priory has no religious association but was part of the manorial complex at Sutton Scarsdale. The surviving evidence indicates that it was originally seven (roof) bays in length, of stone construction, and probably dated to the mid 16th century. It is possible that it was originally a barn. In the early 17th century it was converted into a two-storeyed lodging range with attics and extended by a single bay on the north. In the early 20th century the northern five bays were converted into a house while the southern three bays formed a garage. During the 1970s the three southern bays were converted into a restaurant.' (4) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 46 NW 2/34 31.1.67 PARISH OF SUTTON CUM DUCKMANTON HALL LANE (North Side) The Old Priory GV II House. Early C17, interior remodelled in 1920s. Coursed rubble sandstone with sandstone dressings. Stone slate roof with stone coped gables and kneelers. Three stone ridge stacks and one stone gable end stack, now truncated. Two storeys. West elevation of seven irregular bays. Chamfered plinth. From left to right - 2-light chamfered mullion window with similar single light window above. Blocked doorway with dripmould continuing over next two windows. Three 2-light recessed chamfered mullion windows with two similar windows above. Doorway with chamfered surround, door with six raised and fielded panels. Single light window above. Broad gabled bay with on the ground floor a large 2-light chamfered mullion window, a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window with dripmould above and a single light window with recessed and chamfered surround and dripmould above again. To the right, a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window with dripmould with similar 2-light window above. C20 garage opening to the right. East elevation of seven bays with chamfered plinth and string band over the windows and rising over doorways. Regularly placed 2-light recessed chamfered mullion windows. Four blocked doorways with chamfered surrounds. Gable ends with 2- and 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows. Interior with massive chamfered beams, measuring 24 inches in depth by 20 inches. 1920s remodelling with plain oak staircase and plank doors. The term priory is a misnomer; the house must have been connected with the C17 Sutton Scarsdale Hall. - Listing NGR: SK4413068930.' (5)
