Full Description

An archaeological evaluation and watching brief at the site of the former Children's Hospital (SMR 32078), North Street, Derby, was undertaken by University of Leicester Archaeological Services in 1999 for Birch Homes Ltd prior to and during the construction of new housing. Roman archaeological features were revealed including spreads, pits, gullies and ditches confined to the east side of the development. Some of the features were dated by the pottery they contained to the late first and early second century AD, and may possibly have represented a linear settlement and activity alongside the Roman road of Ryknield Street.
