Full Description

Milepost, Derby Road, Ripley, an early 19th century structure. Cast iron milepost at Marehay, on Derby Road, nearly opposite Knowlsons Garage. (1) Cast iron milepost, on the west side of what was the turnpike road from Derby to Chesterfield via Alfreton (original Turnpike Trust: Alfreton and Derby). Probably manufactured by J Heywood of Derby. (2) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 34 NE RIPLEY DERBY ROAD, Marehay (west side) 5/78 Milepost at SK 399 486 II Milepost. Early C19. Cast iron. Triangular sectioned base with sloped top and a pointed head plate above. Head inscribed 'LONDON 135', west side inscribed 'ALFRE N 4½ CHEST D 15' and east side inscribed 'DERBY 9 BURTON 20'. Listing NGR: SK3996448706.'
