Full Description

St Anne's Church is shown on 1st ed. OS 25" map of circa 1880. (1) St Anne's Church was built in 1871 and designed by F W Hunt of London. It is built from red brick with red brick dressings and Welsh slate roofs. The gables are raised and coped, again built from brick. There is an integral western tower, nave and chancel under a single continuous roof, side aisles and side chapels. The north-west front has lancet windows linked by cill band and impost band, above there are smaller lancets also linked by impost band and a circular window in the upper gable. The small square western corner tower is topped with a louvred wooden bellcote under a pyramidal slate roof with lucarnes and an iron finial. The aisles have a pointed arched doorway to north with a small circular window above and to the south is a pair of lancets. The south-west front has a gabled double doorway to the left with a niche in tympanum containing a carved pieta. There are 6 clerestory windows, each with stone plate tracery, the chancel has lancet aisle windows and clerestory windows above. The north-east front has very similar fenestration. The south-east front is blind with patterned inscription in blue brick, and a single storey lean-to sacristy beyond with pair of lancet windows. The interior has pointed brick arches supported on circular stone columns with elaborate carved stone capitals. The chancel is raised with a polished marble wall, pulpit and steps separating it from the nave, topped with brass rail. There is a wooden rood screen topped with carved figures. The chancel side walls and roof are painted and stencilled. The ritual east wall has a pointed marble frame containing 9 frescoes, arranged as an ikonostase. The painted wooden altar and reredos are by George Walton circa 1910 and the original wooden pews have been retained. Most of the windows contain good quality contemporary glass, some by Clayton & Bell. (2) The bell of St Anne's church is of historical significance. It dates from 1852 and made by Wm Cary of Bristol. It is notable as Cary is recorded as a rare founder. (3)
