Full Description

Cast iron milepost, painted white with black lettering. Triangular in section, with a dished upper face inscribed 'PARISH / OF / PENTRICH' and in smaller letters beneath it 'J HAYWOOD JNR / DERBY'. The north-east face of the triangular section reads 'DERBY 11 MILES', the south-west face reads 'CLAY CROSS 7 MILES, CHESTERFIELD 12 MILES, DRONFIELD 18 MILES. SHEFFIELD 24 MILES'. The milepost is situated on the route of the former Derby to Sheffield turnpike road, authorised in 1756. (1)
