Full Description
A 'Railway' is depicted on Sanderson's map of 1835 running from some ' Pits' at Upper Birchwood [see SMR 11918] south-eastwards past a series of further, un-named, pits to the Cromford Canal. (1) The 1st ed. OS map of c. 1880 marks the route as 'Tramway' running between old ironstone shafts via one colliery to another. The southern end of the tramway appears to have been superseded by a new one slightly to the west. (2)
