Full Description

Cast iron milepost on the former turnpike road running between Derby and Chesterfield via Alfreton, and originally run by the Alfreton, Higham and Tibshelf Turnpike Trust. The milepost is triangular, with a sloped top and a pointed head plate above. The head is inscribed '142 / LONDON'. The north side of the milepost is inscribed 'CHEST.D / 7¾ / SHEFF.D / 20' and the south side has 'ALFRE.N / 2¼ / DERBY / 15½'. The milepost is painted white and the raised lettering is picked out in black. (1)
