Full Description

Milepost, Wirksworth Road, Shottle and Postern, an early 19th century structure. 'Early 19th century cast iron milepost, triangular in plan, rising to a back plate with a segmental top. The top is inscribed 'Shottle / LONDON / 134 / MILES. The north side of the triangular section is inscribed WIRKSWH / 5 / MILES and the south side has DERBY / 8 / MILES.' (1) From the National Heritage List for England: 'PARISH OF SHOTTLE AND POSTERN WIRKSWORTH ROAD SK 34 NW 4/66 Milepost 200 metres south east of the Wirksworth and Ashbourne Road crossroads II Milepost. Early C19. Cast iron, triangular in plan, rising to back plate with segmental top. Inscribed: SHOTTLE/LONDON/134/MILES/WIRKSWH/5/MILES/DERBY/9/ MILES. Listing NGR: SK3075946808.' (2)
