Full Description

Milepost, Nottingham Hill, Somercotes, an early 19th century structure. 'Early 19th century cast iron milepost. It has a triangular section base with a sloping head and is painted white with raised lettering picked out in black. The west side is inscribed 'NOTTM / 14 / MILES', the east side is inscribed 'ALFRN / 2 / MILES' and the top is inscribed 'ALFRETON / PARISH'. It stood on the Nottingham-Alfreton turnpike road.' (1) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 45 SW SOMERCOTES NOTTINGHAM ROAD (north side), Somercotes 4/115 Milepost adjacent to 413 Nottingham Road II Milepost. Early C19. Cast iron. Triangular section base with sloping head, bead fillet to edge and raised lettering. West side inscribed 'NOTTM 14 MILES', east side inscribed 'ALFRN 2 MILES' and top inscribed 'ALFRETON PARISH'.
