Full Description

The site is shown as 'Old Quarries' on late 19th and early 20th century OS maps. (1, 2, 3) A disused quarry on the Chevin, to exploit the millstone grit of the ridge, was identified at SK 3369 4636 during survey in 2008. The base of the quarry is grassed over and has been used for fires. The quarry is present on the 1848 enclosure map. A flattened platform, measuring 7m by 7m, was identified at SK 3430 4703 located in woodland to the north of the disused quarry and may have been a working platform or dressing area for the many large gritstone blocks scattered in the area.
