  • (Georgian to Victorian - 1750 AD to 1850 AD)

Full Description

This wedge-shaped milestone, in sandstone, is badly worn. It lies on the 1759 Buxton to Macclesfield turnpike. The inscription is only partly visible: 'To / Buxton / 2 Miles' and 'To / …..ield / .. Miles'. Burdett's map of 1767 shows the same milestone at a site over the brow of the hill, about 200m east of its present site, suggesting it has been moved. (1) The 1st ed. 25" Ordnance Survey map of c. 1880 shows the milestone and is annoted 'Macclesfield 8, London 162'. (2)
