Full Description

Old Gells Mine on Yokecliffe Rake lies within a larger area identified as a high priority lead mining site. It provides an exceptionally interesting but small example of easily accessible underground vein and pipe workings. This mine includes evidence for early firesetting work. (1) In addition to being worked for lead, Old Gell's Mine was worked for cal-spar in the 1920s by Thomas Hodson and Sons and in the 1930s by Old Gell Spar Mines Ltd. (2) 'One of the Furnaces near this Town, for smelting Lead, is converted into a large Coppel, where the Lead is now made, and also a great Quantity of Red-lead: Near this Town are many Lead-mines and Veins of Antimony, and great Quantities of Lime-stone'.
