Full Description
There are seven locally distinctive stone stiles in the Whitwell area. They probably date from the 19th century and are all located on footpaths which are marked on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map. All are step-through stiles which combine one or more steps with a slab set within a gap in the wall. A photograph of the example near 33 Portland Street indicates that there are two steps up to the slab, at least on one side of the wall. A metal bar has been inserted above the slab to raise the height of the stile. (1)
