Full Description

There are seven locally distinctive stone stiles in the Whitwell area. They probably date from the 19th century and are all located on footpaths which are marked on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map. All are step-through stiles which combine one or more steps with a slab set within a gap in the wall. A photograph of the example on Hollin Hill indicates that there is a single step up to the slab, at least on one side of the wall. The slab is either cracked or has been broken and reconstructed in the past and, as a result, has been capped by a metal cross-beam set into the wall. (1)
