Besthill Cottages are likely to have been built as worker's cottages for Besthill Mill (SMR 3682), the site of which lies adjacent to these cottages. (1) Besthill Mill was a cotton mill that was built in 1784 and closed in the 1930s. (2) The mill appears to have been demolished since its closure, but the cottages still remain. (3)
