Full Description

Grotto, north of China House pond, Calke Park, Calke, of mid-18th century date. From the National Heritage List for England: 'PARISH OF CALKE CALKE PARK SK 32 SE 4/29 Grotto at OS 370229 on North Side of China House Pond II Grotto. Mid C18. Red brick, coursed rubble sandstone and squared sandstone. Built into the bank at the side of the lake with its facade towards the lake. Elevation originally symmetrical, right hand part now collapsed. Broad central round arch with voussoirs of alternating size. Flanked by tall rectangular window openings with stone jambs, sills and lintels. To the left again a projecting bay with a similar but smaller round-arched opening, into a recess. Small window in the return wall. Inside is a semi-circular chamber with brick half dome, originally plastered. Listing NGR: SK3699522915.' (1)
