Full Description
The M Howitt Infants' and W Howitt Junior Schools were designed in 1915 by the Derbyshire architect George Henry Widdows. An architecturally impressive range forms the Junior School. It has a large 'U'-shaped plan with a two-storey admin block, with twin entrances under semi-circular canopies, extending into tall classroom wings with short return blocks. It has brindled brick and rough-cast walls and red plain clay tiled roofs with Neo-Classically detailed wide eaves and square-section cast iron gutters. Most original windows survive. There are small modern extensions and some pvc windows. The Infants' School is much smaller but with similar details. (1)
