Monument record MDR12856 - Boundary post, Butterley Lane, Ashover

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

Opposite the entrance to Scotland Villa, west of Scotland Nursery on Butterley Lane, is a wooden post wedged between a stone gatepost and a stone wall. It is painted white, with black lettering. A photograph taken in October 2002 shows one face with 'ASHOVER' and one with 'ANSLEY', the initial 'T' for Tansley being missing. It is not known whether a third face records Dethick parish, as the boundary post stands at the junction of three parishes. (1) Nothing is marked at this site on the 1st and 2nd edition 25" OS maps of the late 19th century. (2, 3) However, the 3rd edition, early 20th century, has 'B.P' indicating the presence of the post (or a predecessor). (4)
