Full Description

Fingerpost at the junction of Station Road and Alvenor Street, Ilkeston. A photograph shows a single finger pointing south along Alvenor Street, with mileages to Derby and Nottingham (possibly 10½ and 7 respectively, but the lettering is difficult to make out). The annulus at the top of the fingerpost has the wording 'BOROUGH OF / ILKESTON; DERBY'. (1) Alvenor Street was not built until the early 20th century. Nothing is marked at its junction with Station Road on the 3rd ed. 25" OS map; however, the following edition shows a guidepost (G P), suggesting that the fingerpost had been erected at some point between the publication of the two maps, probably in the 1920s or first half of the 1930s. (2, 3) A cast iron guide post of old-fashioned finger type, which probably dates to c. 1920. It has a moulded circular shaft, finger posts and a top circle inscribed 'Borough of Ilkeston'. (4)
