Full Description

Milestone standing on the west side of the road north of The Green Hall, Ashbourne. One face is inscribed 'TO . ASHBOURNE / 1 / MILE', the other 'TO / ALFRETON / 18 / MILES / WIRKSWORTH / 7 / MILES'. A photograph taken in February 2002 indicates the milestone was painted white with black lettering. (1) The 1st ed. 25" Ordnance Survey map (and later OS maps) show this milestone as 'Ashbourne 1, Wirksworth 8', suggesting that Authority 1 has transcribed an incorrect mileage to Wirksworth. (2)
