Full Description

Area SK 174 674. Finds by Mr. Goodwin, many classified by the B.M., range over the late Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age. His extensive collection from here includes flint and chert arrowheads, blades and scrapers etc., polished stone axes (all broken), a probable stone adze, sandstone rubbers, ? Early Bronze Age pottery and Romano-British pottery. (1) I have found no artifacts, but at SK 1738 6746 are two large hand cut stones, possibly uncompleted cross bases. Mr. Goodwin retains a vast collection of material. (2) Excavation revealed Mesolithic occupation of a V-shaped recess in the limestone comprising a roughly cobbled area with evidence for a ?raised sleeping platform and in-situ flint working anvil in an enclosed area c15 x 10ft. Horse and red deer bones were found with tool evidence for the preparation of skins. Neolithic remains were found in a sealing layer as well as the surrounding fields. (3)
